Greece: Eu court orders Athens to compensate Nafplio. Over detention conditions at the jail described as “inhumane”

ATHENS, SEPTEMBER 25 – The European Court of Human Rights has ordered Greece to pay sums ranging from 5,000 euros to 15,000 euros in damages to each of the 14 inmates of Nafplio Prison who appealed against what they described as degrading treatment at the penitentiary institution. The ruling which was made public on Thursday was a response to a joint appeal by Greek, Romanian, Hungarian, Turkish and American inmates, as daily Kathimerini online reported. Greece was condemned for violation of the Article 3 of the Convention of Human Rights, which prohibits inhuman or degrading treatment.

The prisoners had complained about the detention conditions at the institution, which they described as inhumane, and extreme overcrowding, a problem that plagues most Greek prisons.
