Inmates incarcerated at a closed E-type prison in the northwestern province of İzmit started a prison riot on Thursday night, climbing the roof of the prison and setting their bed sheets on fire.

Riot police and firefighters were dispatched to the prison after the riot broke out. The prisoners initially prevented firefighters from putting out a fire for some time, but it was eventually contained. Some inmates unfurled Turkish flags on the roof of the prison. Prison authorities held talks with representatives of the prisoners to end the riot.

Speaking to the press in front of the prison, Kocaeli Chief Public Prosecutor Mustafa Küçük said the prison was taken back under control around midnight. He said the prisoners had some demands and prison authorities listened to them.
